Safety Glasses
The University of Michigan Department of Environmental Health and Safety, EHS, requires that persons exposed to chemical and physical agents and other eye hazards wear approved eye protection. This requirements applies to all persons who are in the vicinity of the hazard, whether or not they are engaged in laboratory tasks. It is EHS's position that "hazards from stored chemicals, compressed gas cylinders, chemical waste containers require the use of safety glasses regardless of whether or not active work is ongoing. If a lab truly has no hazards such as a microscopy room, then safety glasses would not be required. If a lab truly has no hazards such as a microscopy room, then safety glasses would not be required." The requirements for safety glasses should be clearly specified in the SOPs and CHPs and strictly adhered to.
